Gaia's scientific success is based in particular on the combination of astrometry and spectroscopy, which provides full 6D phase-space coordinates for several dozen million stars (> 30 million in DR3; ~75 million in DR4 and > 100 million in DR5). In this presentation, we will discuss the motivations and challenges associated with the acquisition of radial velocities in the context of a future astrometric mission.
